Stage: Standard Carnatic vocal setting, with violin and mridangam support

Theme guidelines:

  • Select 2 or maximum 3 Kritis for the 1 hr performance

  • Choose Kritis that are close to your heart, that have inspired you or instilled some positive values in you

  • Kritis can be in praise of same or different gods and goddesses. It is important that you share with the audience, the impact that the song have had on you

  • Presentation format can include both approaches:

    • how you interpreted the meaning of the song

    • your interpretation of composer's thoughts when they composed the lyrics and set it to tune

  • You can do story telling and singing interleaved, it is not mandatory that you finish the story and sing. The choice is left to you.

Other guidelines:

  • Storytelling can be in English or Tamil

  • There should not be any elaborate ragam singing. Artiste can use it to set the tone and flow

  • Some niraval can be performed but avoid swarams

  • Format will not include any thani avartanam

  • Please note that this is not a kathakalakshebham. It's the reverse process, where the songs are selected and presented for its aesthetic value and impact on you


Note: As this series is to promote the Carnatic music scene in Singapore and provide opportunities to artiste, there will be no payment for the performances. Artiste will be provided an audio and video recording of their performance.

Tatparya - is a Sanskrit word which means "intention". This is most often used in the context of written material and is used to indicate the original intention of the author in putting down a certain statement.
